Boiler Upgrade Scheme: Up to £7,500 for Heat Pumps
Last updated: February 2026
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) provides upfront grants of up to £7,500 to help property owners in England and Wales replace fossil fuel or electric heating systems with low-carbon heat pumps. A £5,000 grant is also available for biomass boilers in eligible rural properties.
Grant amounts
Air source heat pump
£7,500
Ground source heat pump
£7,500
Biomass boiler
£5,000
Off-gas grid, rural only
Eligibility requirements
- You must own the property (including second homes, rental properties, and self-builds — but not most new builds or social housing)
- Your property must have a valid EPC (issued within the last 10 years)
- You must be replacing a fossil fuel or electric heating system (gas, oil, LPG, or electric)
- No income test — available to all eligible property owners regardless of earnings
- The installation must be done by an MCS-certified installer
How it works
- Check eligibility — Confirm your property qualifies
- Get quotes — An MCS-certified installer surveys your property and provides a quote
- Installer applies — Your installer applies for the BUS grant on your behalf
- Grant applied — The £7,500 is deducted from the installation cost upfront
Important note
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs until March 2028. It operates on a first-come, first-served basis, so it's worth applying as soon as you're ready.
